What is for Vestec for
Vestec ointment is a medicine used to relieve the pain, swelling, itch and irritation of internal and external piles (haemorrhoids) and other minor ano-rectal conditions such as anal itching and fissures. It can be used post-operatively following ano-rectal surgery. The main active ingredient is Witch hazel extract.
What is Witch Hazel?
Witch hazel is an astringent anti-inflammatory compound, product from the leaves and bark of the North American Witch-hazel Shrub (Hamamelis Virginiana).
How Does It Work for Soothing Haemorrhoids?
Witch hazel has well documented antiseptic and astringent properties which means it can be effective for shrinking haemorrhoids, alleviating the symptoms especially itching and burning), and (to some extent) can help prevent a further deterioration of the condition.
More specifically it is the tannin content (hamamelitannin) synthesised from the plant that produces these effects. The high tannin content make it an excellent natural astringent that can shrink pores. It basically acts a natural anti-inflammatory and since piles are essentially swollen vessels, the extract is great at providing relief by easing the swelling. This is why witch hazel is regarded as a safe haemorrhoid treatment.
Other Ingredients:
Zinc Oxide is a natural anti-inflammatory and thus soothes and protects raw areas and helps to reduce swelling. It also acts as an antiseptic.Bismuth sub nitrate is also an astringent and antiseptic thus protects raw, irritated areas around the anal area.
Product Application:
Vestec ointment is for topical use only, which means it is applied directly to the affected area.
Wash the anal area and dry gently with a soft towel before using the medicine.
There is a nozzle (applicator) supplied with the product which can be used to apply the ointment into the back passage (anus).
For external piles-after washing and drying the affected area, the ointment should be applied using a gauze dressing.
For internal piles-after washing and drying the affected area, screw the nozzle provided onto the tube, remove the nozzle cap: insert the nozzle into the back passage and squeeze gently. Clean the nozzle after each use.
